Bay Area Hip Hop 2007 In Review/ 2008 Preview
2007 Albums
Mistah F.A.B. "Da Baydestrian": Mistah F.A.B. released this album to keep his fans happy while they wait for his major label debut. The album came out pretty good with a nice mix of party and serious songs.
Songs to check out: Sideshow (Remix), Goin Crazy, 100 Bars
Turf Talk "West Coast Vaccine": This is one of this years best Bay Area albums with the best album cover. Rick Rock and Droop-E provided some serious slaps.
Songs to check out: Super Star, Popo's, I'm Ghetto, Groupie
Federation "It's Whateva": After their first album drop, everyone was anticipating a follow up album. However, by the time this album dropped, the anticipation was gone. The album wasn't bad, but it didn't have the same effect as the first one. It didn't help that their most popular song since the first album couldn't get cleared.
Songs to check out: Got Me Fucked Up, My Rimz, New Baby Daddy
The Pack "Based Boys": With a song that was as big as Vans, I was expecting big things for The Pack. As with the rest of the Bay this year, big things didnt happen. There are some slaps on this one though.
Songs to check out: I Look Good, Rock N Roll, Fly
Frontline "Lock & Left": This one gets the award for most slept on album. Great lyrics and great production...what more can you ask for?
Songs to check out: IMG, The Truth, It's Going Down
Too Short "Get Off The Stage": This might be Too Shorts worst solo, party because with 10 tracks, this album is....too short.
Songs to check out: Get Off The Stage, This My One, Gangstas & Strippers
P.S.D., Messy Marv & Keak Da Sneak "Da Bidness": This was originally supposed to be a PSD & Keak album, but the very popular Messy Marv was added to generate more interest. The result...some slaps but this felt more like a compilation than an album...it just doesn't flow like an album should.
Songs to check out: Reloaded, If She Knows Me She Owes Me, Burdens Of His Youth
Messy Marv & Mitchy Slick "Messy Slick": One of the few albums I spent money on this year. The song with Yukmouth is too sick.
Songs to check out: On The One, 2nd Letter, Cherish A Thug
Husalah "Hustlin' Since Da 80's": This is the first Husalah solo I listened to. A lot of his shit sounds like a freestyle...but his style is sick.
Songs to check out: Mamaco, I Fell In Love With Crime
The Jacka & Ampichino "36 Zips": Very good album. Must listen for Jacka fans. It's not as great as his last solo, but a few of the songs are up to par with it.
Songs to check out: I Try, Starz, Droptop
Black C "City Of Gods": Mobb Shit! This album is still getting a lot of spins from me.
Songs to check out: Mashi'n Till We Rich, Gangsta Shit, Ridin High, Mob Muzik
V-White "Perfect Timin": I had never listened to The Delinquents before this album, so I didn't really know what to expect. The result is an album that was put together well with some nice beats. However, there isn't really anything memorable on it and the skits were too much.
Songs to check out: Oakland, This One Go, What The Game Been Missin
Kafani "Moneys My Motivation": Kafani got picked up by Kock off the strength of his single, Fast (Like A Nascar). He'll probably go down as a one hit wonder because his album has already been forgotten.
Songs to check out: Throw Ya Hood Up, Fast (Like A Nascar), Everybody Knows My Name
Other albums were also released by Messy Marv, B-Legit, Eddi Projex & more..
My 10 Favorite Songs of 2007
(songs released on albums in 2007 only)
Messy Marv & Mitchy Slick ft. Yukmouth- On The One
Turf Talk ft. E-40- Popo's
Frontline- IMG
Zion I ft. Too Short- Dont Lose Your Head
The Jacka & Ampichino- I Try
Husalah- Mamaco
Black C ft. Mr.Walker & Moe The Hustla- Ridin High
Federation- Got Me Fucked Up
Mistah F.A.B. ft. Fabo- Goin' Crazy
Equipto & Berner ft. Cait La De & F Dog- Out On My Grind
Artists To Look Out For In 2008
E-40: He's the biggest rapper in the Bay (I'm not talking about his weight) and he's supposed to drop "Ball Street Journal" this year.
Clyde Carson: "He has a deal with Capitol, he is also affiliated with Black Wall Street. He has a smooth flow that should appeal to most." This is what I said last year as I expected him to have a big 07 but his album never dropped. Hopefully Theatre Music comes out in 08.
The Jacka: As I said before, he puts out the best music in the Bay Area. Tear Gas coming soon.
Ya Boy: His mixtapes have gained him a lot of fans...it's time for the next step. He hasn't released an actual album since 05..so I'm ready.
Keak Da Sneak: Koch pushed his album back to February...and I don't expect it to drop on schedule, but hopefully Deify has some slaps on it.
Mistah F.A.B.: He had an interesting 07...and hopefully he has an even better 08 by dropping Yellow Bus Ridah.
San Quinn: Who has been on more albums than Quinn? Nobody. His next album should be just as good as his last.
Yukmouth: Damn...as I'm writing this, I'm realizing how badly albums have been pushed back. People have been waiting for Yuk's next solo for years.
Other names to look out for: Messy Marv, J. Stalin, Balance, Big Rich
I expect 2008 to be huge compared to 2007. The rappers I listed need to drop QUALITY albums right after the other and all eyes will be on us once again.

Info On The Jacka's Next Solo- Tear Gas
We finally have a little bit of info on Jacka's next release, "Tear Gas". It's currently scheduled to be released on this summer (possibly June) on The Artist Records. Features are supposed to include the Mob Figaz, Freeway, Sky Balla, Devin The Dude, Clyde Carson & more.
This is the album I'm looking forward to the most along with Clyde Carson's Theatre Music.
edit: As of July 25th... this album is scheduled for a late August release.

B-Legit Interview From HHNLive.com
Here what he said about the hyphy movement..
M: Where do you see the hyphy movement going now that it's been officially put on the map on a nationwide basis?
B: Technically, I don't know, on this end of the ballpark, movements come and go. Hyphy has already reached its peak, as far as I'm concerned being that the Bay Area is not one-dimensional. If you check out The Federation's new single that they did, they were the ones who made they song "Hyphy." They got the song with Snoop on the radio right now. What we don't wanna get into is "Bay Area = Hyphy." I mean, anytime you think of the Bay you think Hyphy but we're way more diverse than that, we're not one-dimensional. Hyphy is there but when hip hop first opened its gates and the majors came, they signed Too Short and Spice 1, many different acts. And they were all different styles of music, it wasn't focused on Hyphy or the labels. It was very diverse. We need to get back to being diverse. If a ship goes down, your whole team goes down.

First Week Album Sales for Messy Marv + Random News
Too Short has a solo album coming out next tuesday, December 4th, called "Get Off The Stage." I think this is his last album on Jive. The single off the album is "This My One" ft. E-40.
Mistah F.A.B. and Turf Talk are scheduled to drop a project called "Hyphy Aint Dead" on December 18th. This is going to be a siccness release...and I have high hopes. The only siccness release I've heard was that "Messy Slick" album and that one was quality.

Suga-T Interview (E-40's Sister)
The difference between a female emcee and a male is emcee is one thing: what they hold in between their two legs. It hasn’t been scientifically proven that male or female organs make one better than the other. Beyond urban legend, in each fist there is a mic, that connects to their spinal cord, that creates a backbone for heart throbbing, passionate lyrics that will translate into genderless music that transcends through what some would consider as “society’s glass ceilings.”
Suga-T, proved in the early '90s that female emcees could hold a mic and represent the same as their male counterparts. With the support of The Click, which included brothers E-40, D-Shot and B-Legit, Suga-T proved that the storm that would make a dent in the Hip Hop industry, would need the flavor of a woman as much as it did a mans’.
Since then, songs like 1994’s "Hurricane" and "Sprinkle Me," have become Hip Hop classics and a precedent for women in the Bay Area as well as femcees all over the world, to spit, sing and embrace their positions in Hip Hop as qualified musicians.
This month, HipHopDX pays homage, while chopping it up with the totally reformed Suga-T, an unforgettable voice that helped create some of Hip Hop’s most unique tracks.

Bay Area Label News
In other news, looks like "Ball Or Fall Records" is in trouble. That's the label that released Numskull's highly slept on album earlier this year. I don't know the entire story behind this, but according to someone on the siccness.net forum, the CEO had to sell some assets just to get some of his money back.
Shawty Lo ft. Young Jeezy, E-40, Plies, Gorilla Zoe- They Know (Remix)
E-40 on a track with some of the more popular ATL artists. Never heard of Shawty Lo though.

(Beef) Mistah F.A.B. and Royce Da 5'9
Here's the freestyle:
http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/audio/id.3426/title.royce-da-59-blue-magic-freestyle
F.A.B. wasn't too happy with it..so he was on Shade 45 talking about it....arguing with callers and shit...and he announced that he is dropping a diss record against Royce.
Here's F.A.B. on the radio today...
http://www.zshare.net/audio/4424327dfd17f4/
http://www.zshare.net/audio/4424525ad065b1/
http://www.zshare.net/audio/44246854bb72a6/
(Props to "SCUDDA" from the siccness.net forum for posting the links)
Really, Royce didn't say anything much. F.A.B. is just trying to take advantage of the situation to get his buzz up...basically he's trying to pull a 50 cent (which he pretty much admits). I'm not a fan of these BS beefs.....but I'm curious to see what F.A.B. has to say. I don't expect too much from F.A.B. when it comes to a diss, but hopefully he surprises me.

(Review) Federation- It's Whateva
1) Playtime Is Over 2/5
Funny little skit at the start of the song. I don't really like the beat, or the hook. They're pretty much trying to act hard on this track.
2) 18 Dummy Skit
Hella pointless...basically an ad for the drink.
3) 18 Dummy 3/5
Video Link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=p8OHJFQfL3Y
This song is hella old. I hated it at first but its good when you're in a certain mood. The video is pretty cool.
4) Get Naked You Beezy 4/5
Beat slaps....the hook gets annoying after a while though. This is the type of music fedeation is best at.
5) College Girl Skit
eh...
6) College Girl 3.5/5
The drums on this beat are too sick. The verses are boring cuz of the flow/voice they use. Still, this song is worthy of getting played at college parties everywhere.
7) Got Me Fucked Up 5/5
Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/43059751733b0f/
Great beat, hook, and lyrics.
8) From The Bay 3/5
Attempt at a Bay Area anthem. Ok beat and hook...not feelin the verses though.
9) My Rimz 4.5/5
I really like this one. The beat is kinda R&B style...but this isn't a bitch song. The hook gets stuck in my head. Overall very smooth song.
10) Happy I Met You ft. Snoop Dogg 2/5
Video Link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QVwwltJOzUw
I don't like this song at all. An attempt to make a mainstream song...I'm sure some people like it though. Snoop looks funny in the video.
11) Scraper 2 A Benz ft. E-40 1/5
Worst beat ever.
12) She Go ft. Marty Jones 4/5
I don't like the singing on the hook...but the beat is perfect is great for the club.
13) New Baby Daddy 4.5/5
Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/43062065904f28/
Rick Rock did his thing...
14) We On Yo Line ft. Cashis 3.5/5
Nice beat....but people don't buy Federation albums to listen to lyrics about shooting people.
15) Black Roses 4/5
Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/43062932b1453e/
Federation steps outta the box on this one. It's different but I like it....sometimes.
16) Jail Skit
Good lead in to the next song.
17) Fly Away 4/5
I can dig it. Federation spitting something from the heart. Hook is a bit corny though.
18) When I Was Yo Man Skit
It's whateva.
19) When I Was Yo Man 3.5/5
This just doesn't fit in on this album. Nice soulful song though.
20) Bang Bang 3/5
Nice beat...Federation isn't really saying nathin though....outshined by the guests on this song.
21) Break Your Face 2/5
Annoying angry non rap song.
This album has a few good moments, but overall, it doesn't compare to their debut that dropped a few years back. It doesn't help that their most popular song of the past year or two, "I Wear My Stunna Glasses At Night," couldn't get cleared and wasn't included on the album. Rick Rock gives us some more great beats on this album (surprisingly a few crappy ones too), but the Federation tried to do a little too much on the album. Most great albums have a certain vibe throughout, but this album was all over the place. The skits also disrupted the flow. The Federation sounds most comfortable when it comes to doing party tracks, and there are a few nice ones, but if you're looking for something more you might wanna look somewhere else.

SF Anthem (producted by Traxamillion)
"www.myspace.com/streetcredmg its Produced By Traxamillion! FIRE Quinn, B.Banga & San Quinn its the clean version w. the singing there is a street version and there will be a video if the song does what we want and we can get the sample cleared! This song is uniting the city as we speak and killin some bullshit! And we want the whole bay to support and be proud of the song it the SF Bay Area, I knocked the fuck outta FAB's "NEW OAKLAND" cuz it slapped period and everybody get tp talk about where they from, examples Im from New York, jarule, Busta's Im on My new York shit!, Welcome to Atlanta!, Noliaclap! etc etc i could go on for hours support your own and be proud you from the yay! no matter what City! And i even made it downlaodable this needs to be on everyone myspace!"
This beat and sample are so sick...
http://www.zshare.net/audio/42447263fe5f0d/
Bonus Track....On of the hardest songs outta the Bay in recent years.
Ya Boy, Messy Marv, San Quinn- Go There With Me (Remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/42447855b4390a/
(Video) The Pack- In My Car
Damn....they don't even rhyme half the time on this song...the video is entertaining though.

Kafani Sales Update
(Review) Kafani- Money's My Motivation
1) Intro
2) Throw Ya Hood Up 4/5
Song Link:http://www.zshare.net/audio/4020390a237e7d/
Some tough talk by Kafani over a sick beat.
3) Fast (Like a Nascar) ft. Keak Da Sneak 4/5
Video Link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=1CqA082Jbf8
You all should've heard this by now...especially if you live in the Bay. It's catchy and this is the song I wanna hear when I'm cutting through traffic late night on East 80.
4) Like Ooh 3.5/5
I can't get over how southern this beat sounds... it's pretty catchy... but the beat sounds like too many other songs out.
5) Thizzin (Ft. Dj Montay) 2/5
Dude on the hook doesn't sound good, alright beat, Kafani doesn't say anything that entertaining.
6) Lean In It (Ft. Erk and Samm) 4/5
Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/40205618413647/
This beat SLAPS....kinda like the beat to "sideshow", it'll put your subs to work.
7) Fast (Like A Nascar)(Remix) Ft. Unk 4/5
Kafani has much better verses than on the original...Unk didn't really do much to help the song.
8) Side 2 Side 1/5
Weak song...deleted from my hard drive.
9) Cutie Pie (Ft. Samm) 3.5/5
Chick song....nice beat....I dunno how to rate these types of songs...but it doesn't sound bad for what it is.
10) What U Wanna Do (Ft. San Quinn) 2.5/5
Not Feelin the beat...Quinn can't save it either...
11) Hatin On Me (Ft. Kashmere and C. Holiday) 3.5/5
Real nice hook, the guy who spit the first verse did a good job, Kafani is just bragging on this song and it kills it
12) Show Your Wrist Then (Ft. Kashmere, Skywalka, and Pranksta The Kidd) 2.5/5
The beat is nothing special, the subject matter is weak, the lyrics are weak.
13) Everybody Knows My Name (Ft. Kashmere and Keak Da Sneak) 4.5/5
Video Link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zgk2JzexgVI
This song = hyphy...it's old...but it goes.
14) Money's My Motivation 4/5
Solid song...very nice beat...Nice Hook
*Note: I think this album also comes with bonus tracks, including "hyphy ill."
If you're the type of person who values good lyrics in rap, this album might make you commit suicide. If you need an album play in your car and wake up your neighbors when you come home at 3am from the club, Money's My Motivation can do it. There are a few bangers, but most of the album is very forgettable, and with its lack of interesting subject matter, there is little replay value.

September 2007- Bay Area Hip Hop Month In Review
Frontline dropped a hot album
Mistah F.A.B. beat Royce Da 5'9 in a battle
Federation released a video for "Happy I Met You"
Ya Boy released a video for "Holla At Ya Boy"
Keyshia Cole is doing her thing
Lowlights:
Mainstream media seems to have given up on the Bay, Federation's album got practically no promotion.
The Pack's first single is nowhere near as catchy as Vans
Things To Look Forward To In October:
Federation is releasing "It's Whateva"
The Pack is scheduled to drop their album, "Based Boys" at the end of the month.

(Review) Frontline- Lock & Left
1) Intro
2) What Do You Believe In 4/5
Left spit the truth in his first verse, nice beat, decent hook.
3) Take That 2.5/5
This beat just annoys me...except on the part where they have the hook. They're not really saying anything on the song either.
4) Now 4/5
Locksmith solo track...simple beat so that his flow/lyrics could stand out, pretty good song to showcase his talent but I don't see myself listening to it too much.
5) Lefts Girl (Skit)
6) When U Want It 3.5/5 Video Link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GBfbgs785b0
I'm not really a fan of this song...except for Locksmith's verse.
7)IMG 5/5 Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/38670734b3fad4/
Great song...Great Beat
8) Lefts Excuses (Skit)
9) This Is The News 4/5
Chamillionaire has two songs with a similar concept on his album, but Fronline executes it just as well. They go..or went...to Cal, you know they're gonna get political.
10) The Truth 5/5 Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/386728071facf8/
They continue with the political theme on this one...with perfect execution. Everything about this song is great.
11) U Ain't No Producer (Skit)
12) My Backpack 4.5/5 Song Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/3867402f90c819/
Nice storytelling track....catchy hook.
13) Cassandras Anger (Skit)
14) Lock & Left 4/5
Song talking about the watered down rap game...it's a good song and all...but they talk about this topic too much on this album.
15) Game Plan 3.5/5
Song for the ladies....
16) R.I.P. 3.5/5
Title Should say it all...not enough emotion in it for this type of song.
17) Outro
18) It's Going Down 4.5/5
Most recent single, very catchy
This is easily one of the best albums to drop in 2007 (Notice I didn't say Bay Area albums, it's one of the best period). The thing that might have killed it a bit for me is that it's very short (18 tracks minus 4 skits, an intro, and an outro = 12 songs) and I had already heard five of the songs. The length of this album shouldn't be a surprise because it was originally supposed to be an EP. Still, I think this album is worth a purchase with great E-A-SKI production, real lyrics, and just overall quality.

Singles: Let It Go, Shoulda Let You Go
Features: Too Short, Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Young Dro, Anthony Hamilton, Amina, Diddy

10. Was It Worth It?
11. Just Like You
12. Losing You
13. Last Night
14. Work It Out
15. Let It Go (Remix)
I'm not into R&B at all....but I could see that Keyshia has talent...and she's from the Bay, so she gets bonus points for that. This will probably be the best selling Bay Area album of the year.

The Pack- In My Car (First Single??)
According to Chico from Hoodaffiliated.blogspot.com, this is the first single from their upcoming album, "Based Boys."
Personally..I think the hook on this song is one of the most annoying hooks I've ever heard. I don't know if they could pull of a hit as big as "Vans".
